Our Program Goals
The North End-South Como neighborhood will be stronger because of the interconnections built by the North End Area Seniors and from efforts to build a stronger network of formal and informal services for seniors. Healthy older adults will have confidence that help will be there if needed; feel encouraged to promote their health and have opportunities for connections within the community. Our History North End Area Seniors (formerly known as the North End–South Como Block Nurse Program) was founded in 1987 by a dedicated group of concerned residents from District 6 in St. Paul. Many of them had elderly neighbors or family members and recognized the need for a nonprofit home care program that would help older adults remain independent in their own homes. Soon, volunteers were trained and ready to provide friendly visits, transportation assistance, and other supportive services. Nurses and home health aides were hired, and seniors throughout the neighborhood began receiving the care and assistance they needed to continue living safely and comfortably at home. One of the greatest testaments to the strength of community support for North End Area Seniors is the number of supporters who have remained involved since the very beginning. Their continued commitment has helped sustain and strengthen our mission for decades. Today, North End Area Seniors is part of the Living at Home Network. What began as a local effort has grown into a network serving 13 neighborhoods in St. Paul and 4 neighborhoods in Minneapolis. Together, these organizations support older adults in remaining active, connected, and independent members of their communities—because helping seniors age in place is the right thing to do. |
